Good Night and Good Luck
February 11, 2006 Good Night and Good Luck: If you don't see this movie, you're a Communist. Or even worse - a supporter of current President George W McCarthy :)
This evening we popped down to Sunrise Cinemas, our favorite Tampa theatre. After a wonderful dinner and some great wine at The Wine Exchange - the attached restaurant that could do well anywhere - we watched "Good Night and Good Luck". This movie was directed by George Clooney, who also co-wrote the screenplay and co-stars in the movie. The story is about Edward R Murrow of CBS News speaking out against Senator Joseph McCarthy during the time of McCarthy's crusade against Communism.
The parallels to current events are striking. The "you're with us or against us" stance. Accusations without allowing the accused to face their accusers. A preponderance of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt). How can anyone not see this?
Next movie I want to see: Why We Fight

There is no middle ground (neutral position) when it comes to folks that want us dead. In this case, your either with us or against us.

If I could believe that Bush and crew were capable of identifying 'folks that want us dead',If I could believe that Bush had the best interests of the majority of US citizens in his heart,If I could believe that Bush would proceed with honesty and integrity, and a willingness to abide by the LAW,...then I might not feel so cynical. Then I might not feel it so critical to try to keep a wary eye on what this administration does.
But things are not as simple as Bush would like to make it seem. And so these little sound bites that played well a few years ago when the public was buying 'the message' ....don't cut it now. There needs to be more information shared honestly. More adherence to the law. Trust, once lost, is extremely hard to earn back, and Bush has lost the trust of this nation and what trust he'd had from the world.
I know that you believe all those things about President Bush, Vice President Cheney, the administration, and Republicans in general for that matter. That doesn't make it so.
